對於網上學習的定義，有很多不同理解，以下是一些不同的學者的解說；
- Web-based learning (WBL) represents a further evolution of computer-assisted instruction. Technical advantages of WBL include universal accessibility, ease in updating content, and hyperlink functions that permit cross-referencing to other resources. (Haag M, Maylein L, Leven FJ, Tonshoff B, Haux R. Web-based training: a new paradigm in computer-assisted instruction in medicine. Int J Med Inform. 1999)
- Scholars have defined WBL as “a hypermedia-based educational program which utilizes the attributes and resources of the World Wide Web to create a meaningful learning environment where learning is fostered and supported” (Khan; Relan &Gillami, 1997)
- Web-based Learning 「網上學習」，是指使用電腦網路作為教學媒介並建立網路平台，讓學生能互動地丶主動地有效學習。(嶺南大學Integrated Learning Programme，2002)
- Web based learning is often called online learning or e-learning because it includes online course content. Discussion forums via email, videoconferencing, and live lectures (videostreaming) are all possible through the web. (McKimm, Jolie & Cantillon, 2003)
從以上各不同的表述，我們大致可歸納，現今的網上學習範指以電子工具，例如手機、電腦、網絡為學習媒體，讓學生進行學習活動，當中包括互動、自主等學習元素。

從以上各不同的表述，我們大致可歸納，現今的網上學習範指以電子工具，例如手機、電腦、網絡為學習媒體，讓學生進行學習活動，當中包括互動、自主等學習元素。
在教學上我也曾使用網上討論區讓學生作網上討論及學習。網上討論區是一個理想的平台把學習者和學習連在一起(Harman and Koohang 2005)。網上討論區讓學習時間得到伸，學習可以在家中發生，但除了豐富學生的學習經驗外，學生又是否從學習區內學到真正的知識，希望在這個課程內我能得到答案。
